Is the History Channel a History Channel?

NEBRASKA SOCIAL STUDIES STANDARDS

While flipping through the Tv Listings for the upcoming shows on the History Channel I was interested to see that a lot of the shows do not necessarily relate to history and a lot of shows, although they do relate to history are on the air more for entertainment than for knowledge purposes. Shows such as Pawn Stars and American Pickers do have historical aspects shared in the items that they find, sell and trade but they do not necessarily qualify as 100% history at least in my book. In a way maybe these could be considered heritage, such as Pawn Stars having lots of old items that all have a story behind why they are important and who once owned the items. I am not sure.

The nights that I had free to watch a show I was unable to find one that specifically related to what I thought of as history and I ended up viewing an episode of Modern Marvel entitled “Environmental Technology II” that originally aired in 2007. The show focused on eco-friendly technology that has been designed to help prevent global warming. It specifically focused on solar energy towers, a rooftop wind turbine and a car that runs on air. Now, this show was very interesting and had a lot of useful information. From time to time it even talked a bit about why we need to create these forms of technology and why we have to face Global Warming but it was not exactly a show I would classify into the historical category. I mean if we did not have history behind this show and the invention of past technologies, the new technology presented in this show would have never took place but the show does not focus on this aspect.

If interested you can find clips of these show on YOUTUBE, or you can download them from ITUNES or order the entire series on DVD.
